West Chicago, Illinois: December 29, 2011 - The West Chicago Police Department and Fire District responded to the intersection of Kautz Road and Roosevelt Road at 5:20 a.m. for a reported crash of a train versus a car on the Union Pacific railroad tracks that are immediately east of the intersection.
After investigating the traffic crash, it was determined that a 1997 Ford Aerostar, driven by a 51 year old Chicago resident, was traveling westbound on Roosevelt Road and lost control on the railroad tracks due to the icy roadway. The Aerostar crossed into the eastbound lanes and struck a 1999 Honda Accord driven by a 43 year old St. Charles resident. The Accord then left the roadway and struck a pole on the south side of the road. The Aerostar stalled on the railroad tracks and the driver left the car. An eastbound Metra commuter train, with approximately 25 passengers onboard, struck the unoccupied Aerostar.
The driver of the Accord was transported to the hospital with minor injuries. No injuries on the Metra train were reported. The driver of the Aerostar was uninjured and was cited for Driving Too Fast for Conditions.
Roosevelt Road was closed for approximately 1 ½ hours by the West Chicago Police Department and West Chicago Emergency Services and Disaster Agency.
