[West Chicago, Illinois] [February 22, 2012]: The Office of the Illinois Secretary of State, Jesse White, announced last week that the West Chicago Public Library District has been awarded an Illinois Per Capita Grant in the amount of $30,687.06. West Chicago is one of 50 suburban libraries and districts to receive a share of state grant funds based on the population of the service area.
"The grant will be used to meet the ongoing technology needs of the District, including software and hardware purchases, maintenance, service and connectivity," said Administrative Librarian Melody E. Coleman. "For the nearly 30,000 residents of the District, these state funds help ensure that we have additional resources to meet patrons' demands for equipment, electronic access, technology and materials," added Coleman. "We enthusiastically receive these funds from the Secretary of State that allow us to bring greater enhanced service possibilities to our patrons, especially in these tough economic times."
Many library officials across the state weren't counting on any annual grant monies to be distributed by the Secretary of State in 2012. While funding has been reduced considerably from prior years, suburban library grants range this year from $1,700 to $200,000. The money will likely come later this year, as grant funds are issued first to the neediest libraries which must use the money to stay open.
