National School Service Initiative Comes to West Chicago's Afterschool Program

On February 17, FORWARD, the B.R. Ryall YMCA of Northwestern DuPage County, and Action for Healthy Kids will launch its national service initiative, Get in the Action, in West Chicago Elementary School District 33 to support the District in providing nutritious afterschool snacks.
The West Chicago Middle School Afterschool Program purchased an industrial refrigerator using funds donated by Central DuPage Hospital, a member of Cadence Health, along with additional contributions raised through the Get in the Action Party in September 2011. Other sponsors include the DuPage Medical Group Charitable Fund, Edward Hospital, DuPage County Health Department, Action for Healthy Kids, FORWARD, the Y, and J.R. Albert Foundation.
Because of this refrigerator, the afterschool program will be able to offer supersnacks, provided by the Northern Illinois Food Bank After-School Nutrition Program.
To celebrate this, volunteers, along with staff from the B.R. Ryall YMCA of Northwestern DuPage County and FORWARD will conduct four activity stations for the students. Activities will include the Go, Slow, Whoa nutrition education game; "How Much Sugar Is In It?", a sugar-loaded beverage education game; "How Much Fat Is In It?", a fat and nutritional label education game; and " Energy Out", a fitness education station. These hands-on activities will equip the students with the ability to make healthy choices each day.
Action for Healthy Kids launched Get in the Action last September in Chicago to inspire volunteers and schools to come together for healthier children and schools each and every day.
